SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State men’s basketball player Max Shulga discussed the conflict between Russia and his homeland of Ukraine.

The sophomore Aggie guard recently sat down with Utah State Athletics to detail his feelings about what is taking place on the other side of the world in his native country.

“It doesn’t feel real,” Shulga said of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Kyiv, Ukraine native said added that he has a lot of emotions about what is taking place right now. Shulga said that he’s been able to call his family in Ukraine and that he is happy to see them safe but is upset by the situation surrounding his relatives.

Before the Aggies’ game against Colorado State on February 26, the USU student section showed solidarity with Shulga by forming a blue and yellow design in the crowd with colored cards in honor of the Ukrainian flag.

Shulga spoke about the support by his fellow Utah State students and what it meant to him.

Max Shulga this season

Shulga has appeared in 51 games during his USU career, including two starts this season.

This season, the Ukrainian player has averaged 3.9 points on 47.1 percent shooting. He also averages 1.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 0.7 steals per contest.

Shulga has helped the Aggies to a 16-14 record this season, including 7-10 in Mountain West Conference action.

Utah State’s next game is its regular season finale. The Aggies will play on the road against the San Jose State Spartans on Friday, March 4 at 9 p.m. (MDT). The game will be aired on The Zone Sports Network.
