PROVO, UT- SEPTEMBER 29: Cooper Legas #5 of the Utah State Aggies runs out of the pocket chased by Max Tooley #31 and Alden Tofa #51 of the Brigham Young Cougars during the first half of their game September 29, 2022 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah.

LOGAN, Utah – Cooper Legas used his legs, scrambling for a 32-yard scoring run that gave Utah State a late 34-24 lead over Air Force.

Utah State (1-4, 0-1) is hosting the Air Force Falcons (4-1, 1-1) at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, October 8.

Legas broke right through the heart of the Falcon defense on his way to paydirt. He finished with 48 yards on the ground in the drive.

In his first start in front on the home Maverik Stadium crowd, Legas has put up solid stats. He is 18-for-23 with one interception and two touchdowns. On the ground, the junior quarterback has 76 total yards.

Utah State leads Air Force with less than four minutes remaining.

Utah State football hosts Air Force Football

This game is a matchup of the Mountain West’s least penalized team (Air Force) against the conference’s most penalized team (Utah State).

The Aggies have shot themselves in the foot repeatedly with 47 penalties, racking up 432 negative yards, or an average of 86.4 penalty yards per game. They have the fourth most penalties in college football this season.

On the other sider of the coin, Air Force has committed 18 penalties this season for an average of less than 30 penalty yards per game. By contrast, Utah State has had 11 penalties in a single game three times already this year.

Beyond beating themselves with penalties, the Aggies have turned the ball over at an alarming rate this season. Last in the Mountain West with 15 total turnovers, USU is minus-eight in turnover margin this season, tied for the fifth worst mark in FBS. Their 15 turnovers is last in college football and 13 TO’s in the past three games would be tied with Northwestern for the worst mark overall.

Utah State named five captains for tonight’s game. Graduate senior wide receiver Brian Cobbs; senior linebacker AJ Vongphachanh; graduate senior safety Hunter Reynolds; freshman linebacker Max Alford; and graduate senior offensive lineman Chandler Dolphin.
