PROVO, Utah – BYU football wrapped up their second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

The scrimmage was closed to the media, Cougar Club, and the public on Saturday.

As they did with the first scrimmage, BYU athletics released some footage of the last Saturday scrimmage in camp.

BYU football scrimmage breakdown

Here’s a breakdown of what’s in the video and some analysis.

(0:11): Jaren Hall takes off with a quarterback keeper.

On the first day of fall camp, BYU Offensive Coordinator told the KSL Sports Zone that they wouldn’t dial up any design runs for Hall. If he ran, it would be in the form of a scramble.

There was also a QB keeper for Hall in Tuesday’s practice.

Also, Earl Tuioti-Mariner got his hands on Hall, who’s rocking the no-touch royal blue jersey.

(0:14): Pepe Tanuvasa gets a two-hand touch tackle on Miles Davis.

Tanuvasa switched from defensive end and returned to the “Mike” linebacker spot this season. The former Navy Midshipmen is likely in that second unit behind Keenan Pili at “Mike.”

(0:19): Jackson Kaufusi breaks up a pass from quarterback Jacob Conover.

It will be interesting to see where Kaufusi fits into the linebacker rotation this fall. A former Brighton High standout, Kaufusi was recovering from an injury in the off-season. However, he’s been a full participant throughout fall camp.

Miles Davis continues to shine in scrimmages

(0:25): Miles Davis is working his way into scrimmage stardom. Will his success in scrimmages translate to success in games this fall? He’s healthy and appears poised for a leap in his development.

Also, notice Kingsley Suamataia at right tackle, Harris LaChance at right guard, and Joe Tukuafu at center.

During the Tuesday practice, Tukuafu was running with the first team offensive line unit, with Pay on the second team.

(0:31): Defensive end Blake Mangelson sheds a block at the line of scrimmage against offensive tackle Brayden Keim to make the stop on Davis. Mangelson was a surprising story that emerged out of nowhere last year. The former Juab High standout will only see his role grow this fall.

(0:37): A touchdown pass from Jacob Conover to Tanner Wall. Wall has been a touchdown machine in scrimmages this month. Could it be enough to earn a spot on the travel roster in two weeks?

(0:55): Quick screen pass from Jaren Hall to tight end Dallin Holker.

(1:01): Jacob Conover scrambles out of the pocket and looks to get a pass off. But he’s denied by BYU defensive end Tyler Batty. Batty is BYU’s top player at the Outside Edge spot.

Isaac Rex finds the endzone

(1:09): Jaren Hall finds tight end Isaac Rex open in the passing game. Rex runs down the sideline and finds the endzone for a score. After nine months of recovery from the ankle injury he suffered at the USC game, Rex looked fluid on the run for the score.

In the past two seasons, Rex has found the endzone 15 times. He’s one of BYU’s top targets in red zone situations entering the 2022 season.

(1:16): Lorenzo Fauatea has seen his stock jump in fall camp. The former Hunter High star is now above 300 pounds and is playing at defensive tackle instead of at defensive end. Last year, he was dealing with a back injury he suffered in the off-season. He’s looked like a new and improved player this month.

(1:27): Micah Harper forces an incomplete pass against Talmage Gunther. At the beginning of camp, Harper was dealing with an ankle injury. He appears to be healthy now and could be a key option at either safety or nickel.

(1:44): Chase Roberts scores a touchdown. How he touched the football was not shown in this play, but Roberts shows his playmaking ability in this clip. Last year, Roberts was dealing with injuries early in the season. But by November, he was suited up and one of the scout team stars.

Assuming Keanu Hill takes the third wide receiver spot, Roberts could be next in line after him as the fourth receiver. That’s a positive development for BYU football as Roberts is only a redshirt freshman.

(1:51): BYU walk-on QB Nick Billoups scrambles out of the pocket and is tackled by freshman Logan Pili.
