SALT LAKE CITY – On Wednesday, the Utah Jazz announced that they would remain with AT&T Sports Net for the upcoming 2022-23 season, and explore new streaming options next summer.

Jazz president Jim Olson indicated that all options were on the table for the Jazz from teaming with an existing regional sports network to carving out never-before-seen options for fans who want to watch their team.

While the Jazz could add as many bells and whistles to their broadcasts as they want, the most important aspect of their future deal will be simple, how much does streaming cost?

Currently, fans have limited options to stream games using over-the-top services to watch the Jazz that don’t require a contract with a major television provider.

Those streaming services are DirecTV Stream which costs upwards of $90 a month, and FuboTV which ranges from $70-100.

The upside to those services is they can be viewed anywhere on most devices without any blackouts. The downside however is the cost is similar, if not more expensive than traditional television providers.

When the Jazz open the 2023-24 season with a new television and streaming contract in hand, fans will have to feel like they’re getting better bang for their buck than the limited options they currently face.

There may be some hope on the horizon.

On Wednesday, Bally Sports, which owns the broadcast rights to 16 of the 30 NBA teams announced it was launching a new streaming option to service those markets.

And the best part, it only costs $19.99 per month.

“Bally Sports+ will be available to subscribers at $19.99 per month or $189.99 per year and include the option for a seven-day free trial,” the company announced. “Additional pricing options will be released when the service launches.”

With the $19.99 streaming option subscribers will have access to the NBA and NHL games in those markets without the added costs of DirecTV Stream and FuboTV due to their numerous additional channels.

While Bally Sports owns the rights to several MLB teams, only five are available on the new streaming service, though more are expected to be added next season at a higher cost.

Without an MLB team in Utah, those raised market prices wouldn’t apply in a competing deal.

Bally Sports+ is not without its drawbacks, as the service isn’t available on either Roku or Amazon Fire TVs at the moment and it doesn’t offer other sports channels like ESPN. It is available on Apple TV and using Android devices.

Though those streaming devices would be an added upfront cost (ranging between $30-$160) they would still offer significant savings over the length of a season compared to Jazz fans current options.

While there’s no indication that the Jazz would team with Bally Sports as their provider next season, the $19.99 monthly fee set for streaming in other markets is a promising start.

Jazz fans will have to pick a pricier option this season, but relief is likely on the way.
