SALT LAKE CITY- Summer is in fully swing, but that doesn’t mean the Utes aren’t continuing to get preseason recognition. Over the weekend Utah quarterback Cam Rising was at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana where he reportedly shined, while Monday afternoon cornerback Clark Phillips III was named a Walter Camp Preseason All-American. The honors are one of many for both players who are expected to be big contributors to what many think will be another successful season for the Utes.

The Manning Passing Academy
Not much has come out about Rising’s performance at the Manning Passing Academy over the weekend, but On3 and 247 Sports both had reporters there who raved about his ability to stay cool under pressure. For Utah fans the revelation probably isn’t any surprise, but on a national scale it’s more praise for a quarterback who could be on the rise in 2022.

Last season Rising was a big part of the Utes’ turn-around after a slow 1-2 start to the year. A little after the halfway point of the San Diego State game Rising was put in for then-starter Charlie Brewer. Rising gave the Utes a shot at a win in Carson against the Aztecs in triple overtime, though they still ultimately came up short 33-31. What was evident though was Rising’s leadership when things weren’t going right for his team and their desire to rally around him.
After the SDSU game the Utes went on a 8-1 tear in Pac-12 play with their only loss coming against the Oregon State Beavers under Rising. In post season Utah impressed playing Oregon for the second time in two weeks for the Pac-12 crown while beating them handily 38-10. The win stamped their ticket to the program’s first ever Rose Bowl appearance that was dubbed one of the best games of the post season despite a 48-45 loss to Ohio State.
Rising was brilliant against the Buckeyes going 17 of 22 for 214 yards and two touchdown passes. He also gained 92 yards and a touchdown with his feet which was enough to put him on people’s radar heading into the 2022 football season.
Walter Camp Preseason All-American
Phillips III has been another cog in Utah’s machine that has been receiving a lot of praise in the summer heading into the 2022 football season. Late Monday, Phillips III was named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-American list on the second team. It is the fourth such nod for the talented defensive back that has been getting some early first-round buzz in the off-season.

Along with Rising, Phillips III really stood out against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl with 5 total tackles, 4 solo tackles, one interception and a forced fumble to keep the Utes in the game.
