BYU Basketball Guard Hunter Erickson Enters Transfer Portal

PROVO, Utah – The second scholarship player from BYU basketball has entered the Transfer Portal. Guard Hunter Erickson is the latest entrant into the portal, bringing BYU’s number of entries this off-season to three.

Erickson, a 6-foot-3, 191-pound guard was part of the BYU basketball program for the past two seasons. He signed with BYU when Dave Rose was the head coach in the 2018 recruiting class out of Timpview High School. Erickson was a top 247 recruit nationally according to 247Sports’ ratings.

After graduating from Timpview, Erickson served a Spanish-speaking mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Charlotte, North Carolina. He enrolled at BYU during the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2020-21 season.

Hunter Erickson was at BYU for two seasons

Erickson is an athletic, high-flying guard who struggled to carve out a consistent role within Mark Pope’s rotation the past two seasons. A rotation featuring senior-heavy guard lines led by Alex Barcello, Brandon Averette, and Te’Jon Lucas.

Erickson, who boasts close to a 40-inch vertical, appeared in 27 games the past two seasons. His best performance at BYU was a career-high 10-point performance against Division II Westminster in 27 minutes.

After the season-ending injury to BYU big man Gavin Baxter against UVU on December 1, Erickson appeared poised to see more time in a smaller lineup from Mark Pope. Erickson earned 14 minutes in a road win over Missouri State, but he only had three more game appearances that saw more than 10 minutes of action, including the Westminster performance.

Erickson has three years of college eligibility remaining. His entry into the Transfer Portal now gives BYU two open scholarships for the 2022-23 roster. Erickson recorded 139 minutes of action in two seasons at BYU.

Mark Pope and his staff are already exploring options to fill the scholarship voids. The Cougars are actively pursuing JUCO Player of the Year Sean East, a point guard from John A. Logan College. East has BYU in his final six schools.

During this cycle, the Cougars have also expressed interest in nearly 30 players out of the Transfer Portal.
