SALT LAKE CITY – The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly expected to franchise tag former Bingham High School standout and current NFL tight end Dalton Schultz.
On Monday, March 7, FanSided’s Matt Verderame reported that the Cowboys are expected to tag Schultz and pursue a long-term extension.
March 8 is the deadline for NFL teams to franchise tag players.
“If he surprisingly doesn’t get tagged, expect a bidding war. My understanding is 9-10 teams have expressed strong interest in the 25-year-old,” Verderame tweeted.
Per league conversations, the Cowboys are expected to tag TE Dalton Schultz with the idea of a long-term extension later on.

Schultz is slated to become an unrestricted free agent when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 16. He is one of 20 local free agents this offseason.
If Schultz is tagged by the Cowboys, Dallas will be able to negotiate with Schultz on a contract extension until the summer. If the two parties are unable to reach an agreement, Schultz would play under the franchise tag next season.
By playing under the franchise tag in 2022, the Bingham High alum would reportedly earn around $11 million.
About Dalton Schultz
Following his high school career at Bingham, Schultz played for the Stanford Cardinal.
After his time at Stanford, the Cowboys selected Schultz during the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Schultz saw little playing time during his first two seasons in the league. In 2020, he caught the first touchdown of his NFL career and finished the year with four scores.
Last season, Schultz had a breakout year for Dallas. He helped the Cowboys reach the playoffs and ended the year with 78 catches for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.
