BYU Basketball - Seneca Knight...

MORAGA, CA - FEBRUARY 19: Brigham Young Cougars forward Seneca Knight (24) stands ready for a move my St. Mary's Gaels guard Tommy Kuhse (12) during the game between the BYU Cougars and the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, California. PROVO, Utah – The status of BYU basketball forward Seneca Knight will be one to monitor heading into the WCC Tournament.

Knight has missed the last two games due to a thumb injury he suffered in BYU’s loss at Saint Mary’s on February 19. He also rolled his ankle during the setback to the Gaels.

For a BYU team that only has an eight-man rotation without Knight, the presence of the 6-foot-6, 224-pound forward is valuable as the Cougars look to fight their way off the bubble and into the 2022 NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid.

Mark Pope provides an update on Seneca Knight

Knight didn’t practice on Tuesday during the media observation portion at the Marriott Center. BYU head coach Mark Pope answered questions on Tuesday after practice about how Knight is progressing with his injury.

“He’s doing good,” Pope said. “He shot a little bit [Monday] and shot a little bit today (Tuesday, March 1). So it’s going to be kind of a day-by-day thing, we’ll see.”

When healthy, Knight established himself as a mainstay on BYU’s starting five in February at small forward. Before the Pepperdine game on February 26, Pope told BYU play-by-play voice Greg Wrubell that he hoped Knight’s season wasn’t over because of this current thumb injury.

Knight has started eight games in his first season at BYU since transferring from LSU and appeared in 27 of BYU’s 30 games. The New Orleans native averages 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game for Mark Pope’s squad. He’s also emerged as one of BYU’s top defensive players.

BYU basketball gears up for Las Vegas

BYU basketball opens the West Coast Conference Tournament as a 5-seed Friday night in Las Vegas. The 21-9 Cougars will face Loyola Marymount or Pacific at The Orleans Arena (7 p.m., BYUtv & KSL NewsRadio).

BYU played Te’Jon Lucas, Alex Barcello, Gideon George, Caleb Lohner, and Fousseyni Traore in its starting five the past two games without Knight. BYU won both of those games at home last week over LMU and Pepperdine to close out the regular season.
