Utah Valley Upsets No. 12 BYU In Overtime Crosstown Clash

OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley Wolverines stunned the No. 12 BYU Cougars in an overtime edition of the “Crosstown Clash” matchup.
The Wolverines hosted the ranked Cougars at UCCU Center on Wednesday, December 1.
UVU beat BYU in overtime, 72-65.

Fardaws Aimaq led the Wolverines with massive double-double featuring 24 points and 22 rebounds. Aimaq added four assists, five steals, and three blocks in Utah Valley’s win.

Both teams struggled to score for the majority of the contest.
After a close first half, the Wolverines went into the halftime break trailing by only two points, 24-22.
Although offense picked up in the second half, the game remained a defensive battle.
The Wolverines were close to closing the Cougars out in regulation before BYU tied the game up with 1.7 seconds left in the second half.
In overtime, it was all Utah Valley.
The Wolverines outscored the Cougars 17-10 during the extra five minutes of basketball, including a 10-0 run.

Utah Valley finished the game shooting 31.3 percent overall and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Wolverines held the Cougars to 31.9 percent shooting from the field, including 25.9 percent from downtown.
UVU had three players reach double figures in scoring, Aimaq and Justin Harmon led the Wolverines with 24 points apiece. Harmon was a big spark off the bench for Utah Valley and added seven boards, one assist, two steals, and three blocks in addition to his scoring total.

With the win, the Wolverines improved to a record of 7-1 this season, including 3-0 at home.
Utah Valley’s next game is against the Yellowstone Christian College Centurions on Friday, December 3 at 6 p.m. (MDT). The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
