PROVO, Utah – BYU football running back Tyler Allgeier was named a semifinalist for the 2021 Doak Walker Award. The Doak Walker Award is an annual trophy that is given to college football’s top running back.

Allgeier is one of 10 running backs that is a semifinalist for the prestigious award that has been a fixture on the college football award circuit since 1990.

A sophomore running back from Fontana, California, Allgeier came into this season with high expectations as he rushed for 1,130 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2020. He’s already passed those numbers during the 2021 campaign in one less game.

Through 10 games this season, Allgeier has rushed for 1,162 yards and 17 touchdowns on 203 carries.

Allgeier has rushed for more than 100 yards in four games this season. He’s also had two games over 200 yards., including a 266-yard performance against the Virginia Cavaliers on October 30.

The 2021 season could be Allgeier’s final season at BYU, as he was honored during the team’s Senior Day festivities before their win against Idaho State on November 6. Allgeier joined the BYU football program in 2018 as a preferred walk-on where he was a record-setting running back in high school. However, he didn’t have much of a role on the offensive side. Then he switched to the defensive side at linebacker in 2019 before permanently turning back to the offense.

BYU football has a history with the Doak Walker Award. In 2001, Luke Staley won the award after rushing for 1,582 yards and 24 touchdowns. Staley’s award-winning campaign in 2001 is the single-season record for most rushing yards by a BYU player all-time. Allgeier is 420 yards away from tying that mark with three games remaining.
