Utah Women’s Basketball Goes Ice Cold In Blowout Loss To No. 6 Stanford

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah women’s basketball struggled shooting the ball throughout the game in their 83-41 loss to No. 6 Stanford on Sunday afternoon.

The Utah women’s basketball team shot just 24 percent (13-54) from the field in their loss to Stanford. They also shot just 4 percent (1-22) from the three-point line and 56 percent (14-25) from the free throw line.

Lola Pendande led the Utes with a season-high 11 points, scoring all of her points in the second half. Brynna Maxwell had just 4 points on 2-of-7 shooting, while Kemery Martin recorded 4 points on 2-of-15 from the floor.

The game was tied at 2 before Stanford went on a 10-0 run by the first media timeout in the first quarter. Stanford took a 24-7 lead at the end of the opening period. The Utes shot just 21 percent from the field and missed all seven of their three-point attempts. Kennady McQueen, Peyton McFarland and Kemery Martin each had two points, while Zuzanna Puc had one free throw.

In the second quarter, Stanford benefited from an 11-0 run and the Utes went scoreless for over 5 minutes. Utah went into the halftime break shooting just 1-for-11 from the field and went nearly four minutes without a bucket. The Cardinal had a 47-14 halftime lead. The Utes shot 5-of-27 from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play and just 1-for-14 from beyond the arc.

The third quarter was much better for the Utes but their defense still allowed 23 points. Utah scored 15 points with 9 of them coming from the free throw line. They shot just 3-of-14 from the floor and 0-for-5 from downtown. The Utes made 9 of their 12 free throw attempts. Lola Pendande led the Utes with 7 points, going 7-of-10 at the charity stripe. Niyah Becker added 4 points, while Brynna Maxwell and Andrea Torres each scored a bucket.

With the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, Stanford struggled shooting the ball, going over 3 minutes without a field goal. The Cardinal outscored the Utes 13-12 in the final period.

The Utes fell to 5-11 overall and 4-11 in Pac-12 play. They will return home this week to face UCLA on Friday, February 12 at 11 a.m. MST. The game will be streamed at utahutes.com.
