SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – With the recent spike in coronavirus cases around the country, college football conferences are looking at their options leading up to the season.
With less than 60-days until Utah and BYU are scheduled to kickoff at Rice-Eccles Stadium, that game and others around the conference are in question.
Tom Dienhart, who covers Purdue for goldandblack.com is reporting that the Big Ten is considering moving their season to a conference-only schedule. He also spoke to a source that is saying that the Pac-12 could follow.
If football happens, non-conference football isn't — at least in the Big Ten and the Pac-12 https://t.co/zIBIZLMhqR

“I know the Pac-12 is talking about that right now, starting later, which would allow for more time for testing to be more accurate and just to be able to get your guys more prepared. If I had to guess now, I’d say we start the fifth or the twelfth,” the source told Dienhart.
If this report is true then Utah would not face BYU, Wyoming or Montana State in 2020. But, some questions still remain.
- Will the Pac-12 move their season to the spring of 2021?
- Will other power five conferences do the same?
- Could the season still happen in the fall but tweak the scheduling?
Certain answers to those questions open up a completely different conversation that will be had in the coming days and weeks.
