SALT LAKE CITY – A trio of local NFL players were released by a couple of teams that compete in the AFC East division. The moves arrived a day before the league’s deadline to trim active rosters to 53 players.

Local NFL Players Waived

Former BYU wide receiver Neil Pau’u, ex-Utah cornerback Javelin Guidry, and former Ute defensive lineman Bradlee Anae were waived by their now-previous employers on Monday, August 29. Pau’u was officially released by the Buffalo Bills on Monday morning. The former Cougar was one of six players released by Buffalo.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Guidry had been let go by the New York Jets. “The #Jets have released DB Javelin Guidry, who played all 17 games last year and had three starts. A claim possibility,” the NFL insider tweeted.

Anae’s depature from the Jets was reported by multiple sources, including Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson. The defensive end originally signed with the Jets in January.

Neil Pau’u with the Bills

The Santa Ana, California native played at BYU from 2017-21. After playing from 2017-18, Pau’u sat out the 2019 season before returning to the Cougars a year later.

Pau’u finished his BYU career with 123 catches for 1,484 yards and 13 touchdowns in 46 games played.

He signed with the Bills following the NFL Draft on April 30.

During Buffalo’s three preseason contests, Pau’u had a combined six receptions for 56 yards. In the Bills’ preseason finale, Pau’u led Buffalo’s receiving group with four catches for 46 yards.

Javelin Guidry & Bradlee Anae with the Jets

After playing at the University of Utah from 2017-19, Guidry went undrafted in 2020. He joined the Jets as an undrafted free agent.

In 2021, Guidry had 48 total tackles, 33 solo tackles, and three pass breakups. During his two seasons in the league, the former Ute has recorded 70 total tackles, 48 solo tackles, four forced fumbles, and three pass breakups in 28 games. Guidry and the Jets finished the 2021 season with a 4-13 record.

Prior to the start of free agency in March, the Jets exercised exclusive rights on Guidry to prevent him from becoming a free agent.

Before his NFL career, Anae was a standout defender for the Utes. During his time in Salt Lake City, the defensive end posted 30 sacks (a school record), 41.5 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles.

He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 and played two seasons in Texas before getting released.
