SALT LAKE CITYย – Tony Finau has secured a spot in the upcoming Presidents Cup after finishing in the top six in the standings following the BMW Championship.
Team USA
Finau was one of six automatic qualifiers for the Presidents Cup due to his point accumulation throughout the PGA Tour season. Finau finished sixth in the standings on 8,575 points, behind the likes of Justin Thomas, Sam Burns, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and the world number one Scottie Scheffler.

This year’s event marks the first time in which Finau has qualified on points, in 2019 he qualified via a captain’s selection. Furthermore, Finau has been a member of the previous four international events for the USA after being a member of the two most recent Ryder Cup teams where he was also selected as a captain’s pick.
โItโs quite cool,โ he said. โA couple of times I finished seventh or eighth right when they moved it to six picks. Officially my first time making it by points. It was a goal of mine to start the season, and when I finished playing in Melbourne, it was a goal of mine to make the next team at home, and to be able to do it by points I think is pretty special for me.โ
The International Side
Eight players from the international team were selected following the BMW Championship. The eight automatic qualifiers include Cameron Smith, Hikedi Matsuyama, Sunjae Im, Joaquin Niemann, Joohyung Kim, Corey Conners, Adam Scott, and Mito Pereira.

The remaining six U.S. players and four International players will be selected by the respective captains on September 6 and 7.
Davis Love III is the captain of the United States. At the same time, Trevor Imelman is the acting captain for the International team following the decision by Henrik Stenson, who was originally announced as the International captain, was dismissed following his decision to join the LIV Tour.
Finau’s History At The Presidents Cup
The upcoming Presidents Cup will mark the second event in which Finau will compete against the International team. In 2019, Finau and team USA triumphed over the International team in Melbourne, Australia.
During the 2019 campaign, Finau managed to pick up zero wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses. The only point in which Finau managed came in the singles competition against Hideki Matsuyama. Nevertheless, Finau and team USA defeated the International team 14-16 adding to the 13 consecutive undefeated President Cups for the USA after being founded in 1994.
The closest the International Team had come to winning occurred in 2003 when it concluded in a tie. Every other event has ended with a United States victory.
This year’s event will be held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, between September 19-25.
