SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau is looking to win his third PGA Tour victory as he enters the weekend three shots back and in a share of fifth at the St. Jude Championship.

The last player to win three consecutive PGA Tour events was Dustin Johnson who completed the trifecta in 2017.

Finau carded a 68 following his second round. It is his 11th consecutive round in which Finau has posted a score in the 60s.

The St. Jude Championship is the first of three FedEx Cup playoff events and boasts the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings.

Furthermore, Finau won the opening FedEx Cup playoff event in 2021 (The Northern Trust) and is looking to become the first player to successfully defend a FedEx Cup playoff event.

Finau began his second round two shots behind the opening round leaders and concludes the second round three shots back.

Tony Finau Finds Perfect Start

Finau began the day playing off the first tee alongside Justin Thomas and Cameron Young and made a quick birdie on the par 4 2nd hole when he drained a 17-foot putt. He made his second birdie on the par 5 3rd when he stuck his greenside bunker shot to two feet for a tap-in birdie.

His final front nine birdie came on the par 3 8th when his tee shot from 158 yards led to a 3 and a half foot attempt at birdie that found the center of the cup.

He made the turn at three-under-par on the day and nine-under-par for the tournament.

A Back Nine Stumble For Finau

However, Finau stumbled throughout the back-nine and made his first bogey of the day on the 12th but immediately recovered with a birdie on the 13th. A closing bogey on the par 5 16th concluded Finau’s round of two-under-par.

Tee times and pairings ahead of the weekend are yet to be announced.

Other Notable Players In The Field

Other notable players near the top of the leaderboard include The Open Champion Cameron Smith (T5), Adam Scott (T8), Justin Thomas (T17), Rickie Fowler (T33), Collin Morikawa (T33), Jon Rahm (T33), and Xander Schauffele (T33).

Interestingly, world number one Scottie Scheffler and world number three Rory Mcllroy both missed the cut.
