PROVO, Utah – Amari Whiting, one of the top guards in the 2023 recruiting class, is headed to BYU.

Once committed to the Oregon Ducks in the Pac-12 Conference, Whiting announced Tuesday that she flipped her pledge and committed to BYU. BYU is led by Amari’s mother, Amber Whiting, who was hired to replace Jeff Judkins as head coach.

“I am COMMITTED to BYU and my mom! (emoji) GO COUGS,” wrote Amari Whiting in a social media post.

Whiting is a 5-foot-10 guard who averaged 26.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.7 steals, and 3.6 assists per game last year. She’s the No. 31 overall prospect nationally in ESPN’s Top 100 recruiting rankings for the 2023 class. Last season, she was named Girls Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year.

Formerly of Burley High School in Idaho, where she won a 4A State Championship, Whiting will conclude her prep career at Timpview High School this upcoming year.

During her high school career, Whiting has received scholarship offers from Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, Arizona, and Utah, among others.

“Recently my mom was named the new head coach at BYU which has been amazing but also brought on a lot of change. We left behind all the great friends and memories we created in 5 years in Burley, Idaho. I have joined a new HS in Timpview and met a lot of great new friends and coaches.

“With all these changes, I’ve realized that the one consistent thing in my life has been my family. My mom has been my coach for 10 years. She knows my strengths, my weaknesses, and how to bring out the best in me. We have sweat, fought, cried, laughed, lost, and won championships together.”
