Rebooted USFL Returning For Second Season In 2023

SALT LAKE CITY – The rebooted version of the United States Football League plans to return for a second season in 2023, according to Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks.
The broadcast executive discussed the league status for next season during an interview with Sports Business Journal‘s John Ourand.
“The USFL confirms that it will come back for a second season,” Ourand tweeted alongside a link to his story about the interview with Shanks. “The league will keep the same number of teams, but will have games in more markets in 2023.”
The league will wrap up its return 2022 season with a championship game on Sunday, July 3.

The original edition of the USFL started in 1982.
The league played three seasons before ceasing operations in 1986. The 18-team league faced competition from the long-standing National Football League.
In June 2021, the USFL announced it would return for a season with eight teams in 2022. The league’s entire regular season schedule was played in only two games in Birmingham, Alabama. However, all the games were broadcasted nationally by NBC or Fox.
Four local players advanced to the 2022 USFL Championship Game, which is slated to be played in Canton, Ohio, the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The USFL will be the third major professional football league operating in the United States in 2023. In addition to the USFL and NFL, the twice-defunct XFL plans to start up for the third time in February 2023.
However, unlike the USFL, the XFL’s return will feature a partnership with the NFL. The XFL previously ceased its operations in 2001 and 2020.

A year before the XFL’s second stint, the Alliance of American Football ended operations.
