Stanford Outlasts Utes In Sunday Afternoon Thriller

SALT LAKE CITY – It took a second half surge but the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal picked up the road win 83-73 against the University of Utah women’s basketball team.

The Utes hosted Stanford at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Sunday, January 16.

Utah led by as many as thirteen points in the first half before going into the break with a 37-30 point advantage.

In the second half, the defending national champion Cardinal took advantage in transition, scoring seven points off of turnovers and adding another four point on the break.

Stanford knocked down 5-7 threes in the third quarter but Utah countered by shooting 63.6 percent from the field and hitting four threes of their own.

There were seven lead changes and three ties in a back and forth second half before Stanford was able to pull away late.

Utah went without a field goal for the final 2:38.

Freshman Jenna Johnson led the Utes in scoring for the seventh time in her career, pouring in 15 points and contributing three rebounds. Fellow freshman Gianna Kneepkens was the only other Ute in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Cameron Brink’s 21 points led four Cardinal in double figures with Lexie Hull dropping 21 and Anna Wilson scoring 12. 2021 Final Four Most Outstanding Player Haley Jones had a solid all-around game with 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Utes head out on the road where they will face Arizona on Friday, January 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (MDT).
