Tony Finau Completes Promising Opening Round At Mayakoba Classic

Nov 4, 2021, 4:02 PM

SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau has completed his first round of golf at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico and finds himself six shots behind Mathew Wolff, the leader following the first day.

Finau, 32, began his round on the 10th tee box alongside Brooks Koepka and Billy Horschel and notched three opening par’s to begin his event.

Finau’s first birdie came on the par 5 13th before closing out his front nine out with a birdie on the par 4 17th. The back nine for Finau was incredibly stable as he parred the opening four holes. Then, Finau went on a tear when he birdied three consecutive holes from 5-7. Sadly, Finau’s round ended with the lone bogey of the day.

Four-under-par 67 was the scorecard carded by Finau on Thursday. He currently finds himself six shots behind Mathew Wolff who concluded his opening round 10-under-par.

The 2021 Mayakoba Classic marks the sixth time that Finau has participated in the event. Over the years when Finau makes the cut he is yet to finish outside of the top 20. However, he has missed the cut on two occasions.

Currently, Finau is in T18.

Friday’s tee time is set for 11:19 a.m off the first tee.
