BYU Football WR Puka Nacua Named To All-Transfer Team

PROVO, Utah – BYU football landed one of the top transfers in the 2021 cycle when they picked up wide receiver Puka Nacua.

In an off-season that produced a lot of movement in the Transfer Portal, Nacua was among the biggest movers according to 247Sports.

247Sports’ Chris Hummer put together an All-Transfer Team for the upcoming 2021 season. Hummer had Nacua, a former Washington Husky, as a starter at wide receiver. Nacua was teamed up at wideout with Georgia’s Arik Gilbert (formerly LSU) and Kentucky’s Wan’Dale Robinson (previously at Nebraska).

BYU fans won’t have to wait long to see Puka Nacua making an impact in the Cougar offense. Nacua is eligible immediately thanks to the NCAA’s new one-time waiver for undergrad transfers.

Through two seasons at Washington, Nacua appeared in six games, with the Huskies recording 16 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdown grabs. Nacua averaged 19.9 yards per catch in his two years at Montlake.

Nacua transferred to BYU after his two years at Washington to be closer to family, particularly his mother, Penina.

For the first time since middle school, Puka teams up with older brother Samson Nacua, who also transferred to BYU. Samson moved to Provo from rival Utah for his final season of college eligibility.

Coming out of high school, Puka Nacua was a four-star prospect at Orem High. He produced one of the most accomplished prep careers for a wide receiver in the state’s history.

During his time at Orem High, Nacua scored the most receiving touchdowns in a career in state history with 58. He also holds the career record for most receiving yards, with 5,226 yards from 2015-2018.

Nacua is expected to be an immediate contributor to a BYU wide receiver room that returns Gunner Romney and Neil Pau’u from last year’s high-powered offense.

Puka will go through his first practice as a member of the BYU football program on August 5th, when fall camp opens up. The Cougars season-opener will be against Arizona in Nacua’s childhood hometown of Las Vegas on September 4th.
