SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Three of the quarterbacks on BYU football’s 2021 roster spoke about their battle to earn the Cougars’ starting job this fall.

Jaren Hall, Baylor Romney, and Jacob Conover each joined Cougar Sports Saturday’s Mitch Harper and Matt Baiamonte during BYU football’s Media Day on Thursday, June 17.

After backing up Zach Wilson for the past couple of seasons, the three players are eager to show what they can do in fall camp.

Each player spoke with KSLSports.com about the ongoing battle to earn the QB1 spot on the team.

Jaren Hall

“I mean, that’s what you plan for. That’s what you wish for, hope for, work for,” Hall told KSLSports.com “That’s why I came to BYU to play and it’s been a long time coming now, you know, waiting patiently and just working, you know, behind the scenes. You just hope it all works out and pans out. But you know, we’ll see come fall camp and what the coaches decide.”

Hall has played in nine games during his BYU career. He’s thrown for 420 yards, one touchdown, and zero interception with a 67 percent completion rate.

Baylor Romney

“Me and Jaron have been here, this is going to talk fourth season together. It’s been good. We’ve developed a really good friendship over the past four years. Really gotten to know each other,” Romney told KSLSports.com. “With Jake coming in, I’ve known him since he was little as well. We worked out with the same quarterback coach when I was in high school. So, it’s good relationship. We all have good friendship. We can get along well in the quarterback room.”

Romney has played in 11 games during his time at BYU. He’s thrown for 1,008 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions with a 65 percent completion rate.

Jacob Conover

“They’re great quarterbacks,” Conover told KSLSports.com of his fellow BYU quarterbacks. “People have seen them win games. They played electric and they win. They’re consistent. I’m just gonna have to go out and prove that I can be one of those guys, you know, to be consistent, to show out every single day.”

Conover, a four-star recruit, has yet to play in a game at BYU.

Hall, Romney, and Conover are currently listed as equals on BYU’s Media Day depth chart.

The trio will continue to battle when fall camps begins in August.
