PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball’s newest commitment is a legacy prospect in Tanner Toolson from Vancouver, Washington.
Toolson announced his commitment via Instagram Live on Thursday night picking the Cougars over Utah State, Boise State, and Utah.
“BYU, I feel like it would be a really hard option to turn down,” said Toolson. “Just because I feel like I fit in the system really well. I feel like it’s a really great spot for me to go. I feel like I can succeed with BYU and keep growing as a player and hopefully be the player I believe I can be.”

Toolson made the announcement from his sister’s house in Provo. He and his family made a trip down from the Pacific Northwest to see family and make it official with the Cougars.
A 6-5 guard out of Union High School, Tanner Toolson grew 10 inches over the course of his high school career. That growth in high school can maybe be credited to the Toolson family genes. Toolson is the son to former BYU great and NBA player Andy Toolson who played for the Cougars in the late ’80s.

Tanner is also the cousin to former BYU sharpshooter Jake Toolson who just completed his collegiate career this past season.
Toolson helped lead Union High to a third-place finish and 27-1 record this past season while averaging 23 points per game. Toolson’s play during his senior season earned him Mr. Basketball honors in the state of Washington for the 2019-20 season.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Toolson plans to serve a Latter-day Saint mission before enrolling at BYU. He has already received his mission call.
